I just rode through, you can probably make it without killing anything, the area near the gates is rather empty.

Just a footnote: I am sure Blizzard have changed the design of the main doors to Grim Batol. How strange.

Now it is a plain wall with a Wildhammer motif at the top. I am sure there were two heavy doors, just slightly ajar, but you were prevented from entering by an invisible barrier. It looked like there was just enough room to squeeze in, but this was an illusion.
