I'm guessing this post will not interest most of you but i found this information interesting nonetheless:

Checking S.M.A.R.T. Without Third-Party Tools

To do a quick S.M.A.R.T. check without installing any third-party software, you can use a few commands included with Windows. First, open a Command Prompt window. (Press the Windows key, type Command Prompt, and press Enter.)

In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each:

Code: Select all

wmic
diskdrive get status

This works for me on windows 7

Gergel already told me this command will not work with RAIDs.
it is useful if you have a simple PC and you think your Hard drive is about to fail.

if SMART is enabled is BIOS, which usually isn't by default in most mainboards.

I think all self-respecting modern computers/BIOSes have SMART enabled by default, these days.

Anyway. For a one-time check, there's CrystalDiskInfo which is pretty good.

(But for a periodic check with email warnings and whatnot, I ended up creating a custom check in my private remote monitoring system (Nagios). Nowadays I get an email whenever something goes wrong with any of my computers, servers, network-connected devices, or even RnP forum. It's awesome.)
